The Role of Personalized Medicine in Dentistry: Enhancing Treatment Efficacy and Patient Outcomes through Precision Approaches

Personalized medicine in dentistry aims to provide targeted treatments based on individual genetic, environmental, and behavioral factors. This approach is vital as oral health conditions, such as periodontal disease, dental caries, and oral cancer, significantly vary among patients in terms of severity and response to treatments. By leveraging advancements in genomics, biomarkers, and artificial intelligence (AI), personalized dentistry could improve diagnostic precision and treatment outcomes, offering tailored therapeutic pathways that address specific patient needs. This narrative review synthesizes recent advancements and applications in personalized dental medicine, focusing on genomic profiling, biomarkers, AI-driven diagnostics, and predictive models. Literature from 2018 to 2023 was analyzed to explore technologies and practices improving dental care and patient outcomes. Priority was given to studies highlighting direct clinical applications in personalized treatment, particularly reconstructive, preventive, and periodontal medicine. Findings indicate that integrating AI, genomics, and predictive analytics transforms dental care. For instance, the application of machine learning for predicting dental caries and periodontal disease progression has shown promising accuracy and efficiency. Additionally, salivary biomarkers offer non-invasive diagnostic potential, particularly in assessing risks for periodontal disease and oral cancer, thus enabling earlier intervention and monitoring. Personalized workflows in reconstructive dentistry allow customized prosthetic solutions, reducing complications and enhancing long-term outcomes. Personalized medicine in dentistry holds significant potential to enhance patient care by offering customized treatment pathways. With advancements in diagnostic tools, AI, and biomarker-based assessments, dentistry can move beyond traditional, one-size-fits-all treatments. However, ethical concerns, data privacy, and accessibility challenges must be addressed to ensure equitable implementation.
